Communication Coaching for Lawyers

Good legal work does not always speak for itself.

A lawyer can know the law, understand the facts, prepare thoroughly, and still struggle in the moments when judgment has to become communication.

Communication coaching at Above the Bar Advocacy is practical, one-on-one work that helps lawyers see more clearly, judge more wisely, and communicate more deliberately in the situations that shape trust, credibility, advocacy, and reputation.

This is not about becoming louder, slicker, or more performative. It is about strengthening the judgment and communication you already bring—and learning how to use both more intentionally when the stakes are real.

What We May Work On

The work begins with the real situations you are navigating. Depending on what you need, coaching may help you:

See more clearly
Recognize what is actually happening before reacting—whether you are dealing with an emotional client, difficult colleague, ambiguous feedback, professional pressure, or a decision that feels urgent.

Judge more wisely
Discern what the situation requires, what matters most, what can wait, what deserves a response, and what role emotion, risk, timing, boundaries, and professional context should play.

Communicate more deliberately
Explain complex thinking clearly, make your reasoning visible, handle difficult conversations, speak with authority, set expectations and boundaries, prepare for presentations or high-stakes exchanges, and make your professional value easier for others to recognize.

The goal is not perfect communication. It is communication that reflects sound judgment and serves the advocacy the moment actually requires.

This Coaching May Be Useful If You Want To:

  • communicate more effectively with difficult, emotional, or demanding clients;

  • make strong work, judgment, and professional value more visible;

  • speak with greater clarity and authority in high-stakes conversations, presentations, negotiations, or courtroom settings;

  • strengthen communication with supervisors, colleagues, opposing counsel, or other decision-makers;

  • become more deliberate about boundaries, expectations, and professional self-advocacy;

  • navigate a leadership transition, career decision, or professional opportunity with greater clarity and confidence.

This work can also be especially helpful for lawyers who are strong writers or thinkers but feel less confident when speaking in real time.

Why Work With Cara

I bring both sides of this work: years of high-stakes legal practice and a lifelong background in teaching communication.

As a former trial attorney with more than 50 trials, I know what it is like to make decisions, manage clients, communicate under pressure, and exercise judgment when the consequences are real. Before law, I began my career as an award-winning public speaking and communication teacher.

That combination shapes the coaching: practical, direct, individualized, and grounded in the actual professional situations you are facing.

Communication Is Part of Advocacy

Advocacy is not limited to what you do for a client in a courtroom or negotiation.

The way you listen, explain, question, respond, set a boundary, make a recommendation, communicate your reasoning, or advocate for your own professional needs affects what becomes possible next.

Better communication begins with better judgment—and better judgment becomes useful when you know how to communicate it.
